No Big Sign in the Sky

Mr. Beller, one of my high school teachers, used to famously say, “There’s no big sign in the sky that says fair.” This was his reply, of course, to the common complaint, “that’s not fair.” We humans start making that complaint almost as soon as we can talk. We usually quit saying it once we
